Recognize your valuable school library media specialist. For the first time, school library media specialists can be nominated for The New York Times/Carnegie Corporation of New York's "I Love My Librarian" Award. The award encourages library users to recognize the accomplishments of exceptional public and academic librarians and school library media specialists. Up to ten winners will be honored and receive a $5,000 cash reward, a plaque, and a $500 travel stipend to attend the awards reception on December 9, 2008, in New York hosted by The New York Times. Michigan Reads
Kindergarten and First Graders are reading and sharing “Raccoon Tunes” by Nancy Shaw. The Library of Michigan selected this book and a free copy was sent to all schools in Michigan. This is part of the One Book, One State program. Last year’s book was “Big Chickens” by Leslie Helakoski. Watch for bookmarks about reading at home coming home with your kindergarten and first graders.
Great Lakes, Great Books
The Michigan Reading Association picks eight books in five categories: K-1st, 2nd –3rd, 4th –5th, 6th –8th and 9th –12th grades. Students read at least five of the eight books in their category and select a winner. The list of this year’s nominees can be found at: http://www.michiganreading.org/cms/images/stories/PDFs/glgb%20bookmarks2008.pdf
In library media lessons this year we are reviewing the books and will be voting for our favorites in January. At least one copy of each of these books is available in the library media center. These books make great gifts too.
